P001 → Grasp-Ever Crative

Empowering creative voices for people living with dementia.
Grasp is an accessible, inclusive product and ecosystem designed to enable and encourage meaningful arts engagement within communities of people living with dementia, older adults and those, living with dexterity or mobility difficulties. Responding to a brief from Sony on making creativity more inclusive.

The project grew from working with a number of communities that use creativity for wellbeing, including, facilitating art classes at Highbury New Park Care Home, where I explored the barriers to creative participation as well as how it can support confidence, communication and self-expression. Alongside these workshops, I designed innovative making tools: integrating both low-tech and technology-integrated versions-and developed new approaches to how we recognise, value and share the work of outsider artists.

Grasp aims to honour the creative agency of its users, expand opportunities for participation, and shift the way we see and celebrate the artistic contributions of people whose voices are often overlooked

An easy magnetic system allows for the tools to swap ends and enable the user to engage in a number of different art activites such as , painting, sketching, clay carving, stamping and more.

Weekly art classes hosted at the care home with a select number of residents, etomological research into the barriers and difficulties accessing these and similar recources.

Working with a great group of target users allowed for extensive ergonomic testing, developing comfortable, ergonomic shapes that fit a number of user preferances over an extended period. Shapes that allowed for users to use in multiple ways were the aim

By capturing the geometries with LIDAR scanning, I established a manufacturing workflow capable of preserving the objects’ ergonomic and sensorially rich forms that allow for dynamic use. Creating an itterative process of modelling, scanning, altering, 3dprinting, modelling over and rescanning.

CAD renders showcasing a range of timber finishes, highlighting bespoke craftsmanship and premium material detail, celebrating the process of creation.

Mahogany tools are CNC manufactured and hand finished.

As well as providing the tools to actually participate, Ever Creative looks at what we do after, how that journey is continued and how participants can be celebrated as well as leave something behind for loved ones. This can be as simple as framing a peice of art instead of throwing it away after a class.
