P003 → Beeline Boxes

Beeline Boxes is a social-justice–driven initiative that gives estate residents direct access to greenery and growing opportunities while supporting biodiversity and climate-resilient urban spaces. In response to new fire regulations that removed wooden and plastic planters from communal walkways across Camden, the project replaces individual pots with shared, fire-safe planters mounted on walkways. The planters were designed by me through Think & Do.

Planted with evergreen herbs, the boxes are co-maintained by residents and given an early boost by young people from the estate who are trained and paid to tend them, building skills and pride in their local environment. Beyond creating a greener Camden, the project promotes wellbeing, reduces antisocial behaviour, and helps cultivate a brighter, more connected community shaped by the people who live in it.

These communal boxes become informal meeting points-places to pick mint for tea or rosemary for dinner-while strengthening neighbourly connections. On other estates, Beeline Boxes has sparked further community projects, including murals, wildflower meadows, and the Sharing Spaces initiative.
